The Future of Young Doctors at Stake: A Controversial Turn of Events
In a recent development, the National Conference (NC) has pointed fingers at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for creating a storm around the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, Katra. The National Medical Commission (NMC) withdrew the Letter of Permission (LoP) for the MBBS program, and the NC believes the BJP is responsible for this turn of events.
Speaking from Srinagar, Tanvir Sadiq, the chief spokesperson for the NC and a local MLA, accused the BJP of jeopardizing the aspirations of future doctors. He emphasized that the people of Jammu were largely against the protests, which were fueled by Hindu groups.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sadiq also took aim at Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, accusing her of politicizing the issue. He claimed that the BJP's rise in Jammu and Kashmir was due to Mufti's support, and now they are allegedly turning against their own.
"The BJP has played a dangerous game with the future of these aspiring doctors," Sadiq said. He highlighted that the institute had already enrolled a diverse group of students, including 40-45 Muslim students and a handful of Hindu students. "The potential for this institute to produce thousands of doctors in the future was immense, but the BJP has crushed that hope."
And this is the part most people miss... Sadiq quoted Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who pointed out a global irony: people usually protest to demand educational institutions, not to shut them down. "It's a sad day when a political party takes steps to end the future of its own youth," Sadiq added.
Sadiq also questioned the actions of BJP leaders, including Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma and BJP Jammu and Kashmir president Sat Sharma, who met with senior leaders in Delhi over the issue. He expressed regret that religion was being used as a tool to manipulate the future of Jammu and Kashmir's youth.
"Leaving aside religious differences, how many Hindu students would have become doctors if this institute had been allowed to thrive? During the Covid-19 pandemic, did anyone care about the religion of the doctors saving lives?" he asked.
The people of Jammu, including students, girls, and youth, are united against this move, Sadiq reiterated. "A few radical voices cannot dictate the future of our children. The National Conference stands for a secure and bright future for all, regardless of religion."
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the NMC had initially granted permission to the institute in September last year. However, protests erupted in Jammu after the majority of MBBS seats were allotted to Muslim candidates. With 42 out of 50 seats going to Muslim students, right-wing groups objected, and the BJP joined the protests, citing hurt Hindu sentiments due to the institute's link to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.
Following the protests, an inspection revealed discrepancies, leading to the NMC's decision to withdraw the Letter of Permission.
