Jon Jones, a name synonymous with success in the UFC, has boldly declared that undefeated sensation Khamzat Chimaev is the ‘toughest fighter on the planet,’ capable of triumphing across multiple weight classes.
As a legend in mixed martial arts and a prominent figure in discussions about the greatest of all time (GOAT), it's clear that Jones possesses a keen eye for identifying emerging talent within the sport. However, even a casual observer can appreciate the remarkable skill set of the reigning middleweight champion, Khamzat Chimaev.
With a flawless record of 15 wins and no losses, Chimaev has showcased his dominance by winning all nine of his bouts in the Octagon—most recently against Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319, where he claimed the middleweight championship title. This impressive feat has only strengthened Jones’ already high regard for Chimaev, who at the age of 31, appears destined to accumulate even more accolades in his professional career.
During a recent interview with Red Corner MMA while in Thailand—where he was coaching ALF Reality against Daniel Cormier—Jones shared his thoughts on Chimaev's potential. It’s not just about Chimaev’s success in the welterweight division where he originally made his mark; Jones believes the Chechen powerhouse could also hold his own against fighters in heavier divisions.
"I genuinely believe Khamzat Chimaev can succeed at any weight class," Jones remarked confidently. "He ranks among the top fighters globally right now. He possesses the size to compete with heavyweights, yet he also has the agility to drop down a weight class. I can see him excelling in the welterweight category. I’m particularly eager to see how he performs at light heavyweight, as I think he would fare exceptionally well against formidable opponents like Alex Pereira and Magomed Ankalaev."
The notion that Khamzat Chimaev might be unbeatable has been a hot topic among fight fans, especially after his commanding performance against Du Plessis. The question looms: is there anyone out there who can challenge Chimaev successfully? His impeccable 15-0 record has led many to speculate whether anyone can match his level of prowess.
Interestingly, Jones has expressed a desire to train alongside Chimaev. Following Chimaev's title victory, he took to Instagram to share his admiration. "Real recognizing real, hope to train with him sometime," he stated, indicating a mutual respect between the two fighters. While a training session has yet to materialize, they did have an amusing encounter during a street grappling match when Jones was in Russia last November.
