Jedd Fisch and the University of Washington are reportedly in talks to secure the services of a seasoned NFL offensive coordinator, marking a significant move in the off-season. This potential addition comes as Fisch looks to strengthen his staff after a successful first year with the Huskies.
The focus is on Ryan Walters, who made a remarkable impact in his inaugural season as the defensive coordinator. Under Walters' leadership, the Huskies' defense shone brightly, ranking among the top 15 in college football for points allowed per game. Additionally, Washington's defense ranked 11th nationally in rush defense, showcasing Walters' ability to craft a formidable unit.
Fisch's strategy involves retaining key staff members from the previous year's 9-4 season, setting the stage for a promising future. The latest development involves the potential arrival of Matt Cavanaugh, a veteran NFL assistant coach with a rich history in the league.
Cavanaugh, a former standout quarterback at Pitt in the mid-to-late 1970s, boasts an extensive NFL career. He played for the Patriots, 49ers, Eagles, and Giants after being drafted in the second round of the 1978 NFL Draft. Post-playing career, Cavanaugh transitioned into coaching, starting with Pitt's tight ends in 1991. He then moved to the NFL in 1994 as the quarterbacks coach for the Cardinals, a role he's held ever since, making him a familiar face in the league.
Cavanaugh's coaching journey includes a one-year stint as the quarterbacks coach for the 49ers, followed by his first coordinator role with the Chicago Bears in 1997. This led to play-calling opportunities with the Ravens from 1999 to 2004 and a return to Pitt as the offensive coordinator from 2005 to 2008. He then mentored quarterbacks with the Jets, Bears, and Redskins before his most recent coordinator role with the Washington Redskins from 2017 to 2018.
His addition to the offensive staff will work alongside Fisch, as well as Michael Switzer (OL), Jordan Paopao (TEs), Kevin Cummings (WRs), and Scottie Graham (RBs).
