The Pittsburgh Pirates are on a mission to strengthen their roster this offseason, and General Manager Ben Cherington is leading the charge. With a confident tone, Cherington assures fans that the team's work is far from over.
The Pirates have already made some notable moves, acquiring players like Jhostynxon Garcia and Brandon Lowe, and signing All-Star hitter Ryan O'Hearn. But here's where it gets interesting: Cherington has hinted at even more additions to come.
"We have several weeks until Opening Day," he said during O'Hearn's press conference. "Every day is an opportunity to get better, and I'm confident we will continue to add to our roster."
Cherington's strategy involves leveraging Pittsburgh's pitching depth to improve their batting order. He traded Johan Oviedo to the Red Sox for Garcia and orchestrated a three-team deal, bringing Lowe, Jake Mangum, and Mason Montgomery to the team. But he's not done yet.
"I want to replenish our pitching depth," Cherington explained. "We've traded some pitchers, so we need to add back to that area. And we're still looking to strengthen our position players."
The team has already added a first baseman (O'Hearn) and a second baseman (Lowe), but Cherington's focus now turns to acquiring a third baseman or shortstop. He's also keeping an eye on the outfield, despite already adding Garcia and Mangum to join Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz.
"If we can find the right fit at third base or shortstop, we'll pounce on the opportunity," Cherington said. "We'll remain opportunistic in the outfield as well, seeing what opportunities arise."
While Cherington is pleased with the team's progress so far, he's not resting on his laurels.
"We're happy with our early returns, but we're never satisfied," he emphasized. "There's always more work to be done."
So, Pirates fans, get ready for more exciting moves as Cherington continues to build a competitive roster. And for those curious about the All-Star slugger's decision to join the Pirates, check out our article: "All-Star Slugger Reveals Why He Chose Pirates In Free Agency."
